Diverse and Culturally Relevant Books for My Classroom Library

My Students

In our diverse San Francisco public school, my students come from all different backgrounds and face a wide variety of challenges. My classroom is an extremely diverse group of smart and engaged students who are eager to learn.

The biggest behavior challenge in my class is that my students are just too eager to learn and share!

While there is a wide range of reading and skill levels among the students, everyone is helpful in supporting and encouraging each other. With a superhero classroom theme, my students know that each and every one of them are great and have the superpowers to be a learner and amazing community member.

My Project

Interactive read alouds are an essential daily literacy practice. Having access to diverse books that teach from different cultural, racial, and ethnic perspectives is crucial to promote culturally responsive teaching. Being able to see themselves in books (ex: as the main characters, exploring holidays they celebrate) allows students to make further connections to the books and grow their love for reading. Help my classroom library expand and incorporate a wider selection of themes and topics. All of the books I have selected teach a holidays and cultural practices with diverse characters and themes.
