My students in historic Harlem walk in the footsteps of authors like Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. We're building a community of readers here!
In our school library, I want to introduce students to great literature from the very beginning of their reading journeys.
Unfortunately, many simple-to-read texts do not feature diverse characters, which is a big problem when we want to welcome children into the world of reading.
So I've carefully chosen a collection of early chapter books that kids won't be able to put down. We have series books featuring characters of every color and background. We have mysteries, slice of life, adventure and humor. The language might be simple enough for a 1st grader, but the stories are rich enough for all ages. Students will snuggle up in the blue beanbag chair and devour these series books while strengthening their reading skills and fluency. Let's build lifelong readers here in Harlem!
