My students need 40 copies of the novel Divergent so they can engage in a fun, young-adult text. Using this resource, they will create personal Multi-Genre Research Projects.

My Students
Consider this: Many adults who love reading enjoy it because they read books that were interesting to them. My students are vibrant young learners who enjoy reading, but have trouble finding books that are interesting to them. My goal is to get them excited about reading.
Our classroom is incredibly diverse.
I am proud to say that our school is comprised of 66 different nationalities. Several of my students are multi-lingual readers and writers, with English as a second or third language. Their first languages include Arabic, French, Tagalog, Chinese and Spanish. The students come from varying backgrounds. There is a lot of social-class diversity in my classroom, but that is precisely what makes our community so rich.
It is evident that my students truly care about improving the world. Many are involved with service learning projects and participate in programs for those at-risk of being victims of suicide. Also, the students are truly eager to learn and grow. They would learn how to channel their passion and creativity into creating a product if they had a high-interest plot book that embraced the popular culture that surrounds their lives.
My Project
The students will be using the text "Divergent" to create Multi-Genre Research Projects. Through this process, they will learn about the power of writing and the steps of revising a paper using peer review workshop. We plan to read this text and respond by asking the students to write about the book through a redacted story, a poem, a newspaper article, a twitter feed, a blog post, or a genre of their choice. They will gain a sense of the revision process while also exploring the symbiotic relationship between writing and reading.
If you choose to donate to this project, you will not just be donating to the classroom.
You will be investing in inspiring students to enjoy reading throughout their lives. The students will be empowered through this text and they will take ownership of their personal writing, which will give them the skills to advocate for what they believe.
