Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Even though my oceanography students live in a landlocked area, I want them to understand that the Earth's greatest resource, its ocean, belongs to them too. My main goal in this oceanography course is to have them see, touch, or think about something from the ocean each day that we meet.

My oceanography students are in 9th through 12th grade at a specialized STEM high school.

We use a school within a school model and are housed at a large Title I high school. Our student body is very diverse with large numbers of traditionally underrepresented minority students. This oceanography course is a new science elective being offered to meet the needs of our students who have an interest in ocean science.

My Project

Oceanography is an interdisciplinary science course which includes content related to geology, chemistry, physics, and biology. These resources will be used to help students learn about marine organisms that they have not seen in their daily lives. The state standard requires that "Students will analyze how the unique attributes of seawater determine the types of marine organisms and the ecology of marine food webs." As a result, I think it is important that my students are able to experience hands-on activities that allow them to interact with these organisms. Using the requested marine aquarium system, preserved marine specimens, cultures of marine algae, a mixture of two types of diatoms, and dissection equipment, students will culture different types of marine algae and observe their structure at the macroscopic and microscopic level. They will maintain a marine aquarium containing a variety of fish, marine invertebrates, and plants. Students will study the anatomy of a shark and compare cartilaginous anatomical structures to bony fish structures. They will observe two different types of diatoms.

This equipment and materials will make a huge difference to my oceanography class.

As this is a new elective, a brand new lab is going to have to be set up for the course in a non-science room. This project will really improve the quality of the hands-on opportunities in the course and will better allow students to build an interest in the ocean sciences. Hopefully, this will help to make them better stewards of our ocean.
