Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade classroom is filled with a diverse group of students coming from all over Los Angeles. Attending a magnet school means that students are bused from a variety of locations within the greater Los Angeles area. Most students will spend a round trip total of two hours on the bus every day. Our school is a Title 1 school, meaning that most students receive free or reduced lunch.
These fifth grade students are hard-working, caring, and very curious individuals.
It is my aim to provide my students with the resources to allow their curiosity to drive a growing interest in learning. When given the opportunity to explore and engage, these students come alive with excitement and are eager to learn and do their very best.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I entered this school year with a very small number of age appropriate chapter books for my 5th graders. The accumulation of books for the classroom library has been a slow process. These students deserve a classroom library filled with interesting books that are engaging to read. Most of my current 5th graders express reading as their favorite subject in school.
One of my students wrote to me that he just "loves reading because it allows [him] to expand [his] imagination." I want to be able to provide my students with a full classroom library that they deserve.
All children should have access to interesting books that engage young learners and leave them with the desire to read more.
