My Students

I teach fourth grade at a small neighborhood school on Chicago's west side. 85% of our student body is low income and 41% have limited English skills. Many of my students are English Language Learners, speaking Spanish and Ukrainian.

Teaching in an urban school district that is facing a fiscal crisis makes obtaining classroom necessities and supplies difficult.

While our school receives some community support, we still struggle to give our students the supplies and tools they need to succeed.

My Project

There's nothing like getting lost in a good book. I've recently moved to a new school and will be teaching a new grade. As I went through the library the trend I found was old and outdated books!

Our library is in serious need of a facelift!

Your donation will help my students become more engaged readers! Independent reading is a big component of our literacy block. On average, students are reading between 20 - 30 minutes a day. A new updated library and library organization will ensure that every student will be able to find multiple books that interest them quickly!

Students who are strong readers develop richer vocabulary and become more empathetic as they are introduced to new characters. Your donation will go a long way to developing life long readers and learners!
