My students need bench cubby, wobble chairs and a Big Joe Chair for a learning environment that has the potential to meet every child exactly where he or she is when they walk in the door.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title 1 school where my kids don't have access to many things we take for granted, both in and out of the classroom. After years of working with these kids, I have finally been inspired (by them) to take my classroom to the next level with the addition of flexible seating options!
I have spent countless hours researching the right books for our room library, creating high-interest lesson plans, and even making a fool of myself to keep them engaged.
I already benefited from a funded DonorsChoose project to get my classroom redesign started, but I am continuing the process because I feel it is imperative to meet the needs of all my students.
My Project
I am a firm believer in keeping the focus on what is really important: the students. Student motivation and higher engagement has always been my desired end game, which is why I think it's so necessary that I as a teacher am adapting right along with my students.
The fact that some classrooms look the same now as they did 70 years ago is something I find shameful!
This initiative begins with flexible seating options in the classroom, so my students can create whatever learning environment will allow them to be most successful. Ditching rows of desks for benches, wobbly stools, and bean bag chairs is just the beginning of how my students will grow from this project. My students don't know a world without constant connectivity, wi-fi, and a global audience. Outside the walls of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world of choices. I cannot expect them to solve problems and make choices independently if I constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them. Providing these alternative seating options will create a room that is conducive to collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day.
