Ditch that Phone: Games and Puzzles to Exercise the Mind
Help me give my students board games and puzzles, like Risk and Life Sultra: Bulls and Bears To stimulate and help them with their developing cognitive skills, including decision making, problem-solving, and logical analysis.. .
I want my student’s to understand that keeping your mind sharp is important, everyday and to become unplugged from that cell phone. My goal is for my students to have access to various types of games and puzzles that will allow them a brain break from the classroom monotony sometimes and to feel comfortable in the classroom. My students are special in the sense that their willingness to try new things allows them to learn and explore a lot which helps them grow both academically and socially.
I am currently a learning support special education teacher in South Philadelphia who teaches World History, Social Studies and American History in a co-teaching or a modified setting.My students are reading below level and very insecure in the classroom setting.
My students come from various backgrounds and many are English Language learners with disabilities.
Board games and puzzles can turn learning into a fun and social activity, promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, and allow them a break from that noise of social media. By incorporating games and puzzles into the classroom, during advisory or adding it into a lesson, my students can work on their reading, writing, math and social skills without even realizing it. They will become unplugged and these games have the potential to make learning more interactive, enjoyable, and effective for students.
