My Students
First graders are eager to learn and are full of energy. I have a diverse group of children from many ethnic backgrounds, including Hispanic, African American, and Asian. They come from both single and dual income families. They have many strengths and areas of growth, both academic and social. Our class includes friends with speech and language difficulties, social-emotional needs, and ADHD, among others. I strive to meet their needs with a welcoming environment, engaging learning, comfortable seating, and a plethora of reading materials.
Zoom meetings, Flipgrid, and Google Classroom have become our norm during this pandemic.
Our district has provided devices and Internet for families who requested them. Over half of my students are participating in online learning. Unfortunately, the teachers were not provided with devices that are up for this challenge. Students are getting frustrated with poor quality, glitchy videos, and computer crashes. They deserve better instruction.
My Project
Being thrown into distance learning has been quite an adventure! I jumped right into it by trying new platforms and modeling that we all make mistakes. I've been taking a variety of pieces of training offered by my school district, including academic and social-emotional focuses.
Unfortunately, my outdated computer leaves me hanging with delays and drops in service.
As I'm listening to the training, I get dropped and have to reconnect, missing vital information. While hosting a Zoom session with my students, my computer crashes and they wait as I completely restart my device. Flipgrid videos are glitchy and hard to follow.
A new computer would make distance learning much smoother and would also benefit our classroom when we can return to our amazing school!
