This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. At our school, we practice leadership principles through The Leader in Me program, emphasizing the importance of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and 7 Habits of Effective People. We start each morning with a smile, a handshake, and a hearty "Good morning!" Every morning, prior to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, each student chants the school mission statement: We Lead. We Inspire. We Impact our World.
I work at a Title I school in Arizona where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students receive a donated backpack of food on the weekend. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day. They have dreams, they have goals, and they create and work towards action steps each and every day.
My Project
"The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children" (ALA, 2013). Through distance learning calls on Zoom, recorded video lessons, and our interactive work on Seesaw, students will be able to discover, learn, and apply new knowledge of peritextual elements to the books they select for their personal book boxes. They will also begin to compare different artistic and design elements, and why the author and/or illustrator included these details. Doing so will allow my students to explore the intent and purpose of the authors, as well as answer the question, "Why is this important?"
Your donation to my project helps ensure that students will engage with well-loved and classic books that we, and many others, feel every young reader should have access to.
Not only will our students have the chance to fall in love with dynamic and favorite characters, they will also have the opportunity to learn and explore many types of literary analysis while enjoying the stories. You will give our students the chance to truly learn and appreciate the excitement within these picture books.
