My Students

The current situation in the world, and in education, is truly unprecedented. We could not have been well prepared for this state of being, and we certainly were not! Besides the feeling of abandonment of our classroom and all of the supplies therein, my scholars are now dealing with feelings of anxiety and melancholy as they miss the familiar routines of our classroom as well as their friends and teachers.

We call our class STEAM Machines because we learn, as much as possible, through the venue of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) related topics and experiences, which my scholars are dearly missing while they are learning from home.

I have provided suggested activities via the weekly learning menu and have posted videos of experiments and projects to inspire them, but not experiencing these activities together is just not the same!

Currently my scholars are learning at home via activities and assignments posted to Class Dojo and Google Classroom. Google Meets are difficult because of lack of intrinsic motivation and engagement. I also do read-alouds of books during our video meetings.

My Project

I want my students to take a deeper dive into their learning and have FUN (Simile while learning).. My students love to observe and to take things apart....a process called deconstruction. When my students take things apart, they see how the parts work together and gain insight into how to put components together in ways that create something new. The Strawbees Inventor Kit STEM Building Set will hopefully stimulate my student's imaginations and make STEM learning fun. The Big Book of Makerspace Projects will teach students to discover how to create: brushbot warriors, scribble machines, and balloon hovercraft from materials at home for example.

My goal is to provide just enough instruction and guidance to give my students basic skills and then let them take charge of their own learning and discovery.

This is why these resources are a must to boost morale and keep our connection and bond even stronger than ever. As my students grow and mature, their ability to use tools, collaborate with others, experiment, observe, make discoveries, tap into their prior knowledge, communicate and preserve will continue to develop and flourish.
