My Students
My students are inquisitive and enthusiastic. They come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and many are learning English as a second language. Many of my students speak either Spanish or Punjabi at home.
Our school has a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) focus.
We have been utilizing a distance learning model all year. This may change as the year progresses.
My Project
Keeping kindergarten students engaged during distance learning sessions can be challenging. The best way to improve engagement is to make classes hands-on so that the students can participate actively. This project will provide my class with counting frames (rekenreks) to use during lessons about addition, subtraction and numbers. Young children understand math concepts better when they can model problems with real objects. The counting frames provided through this project will make it possible for my students to model addition and subtraction equations using beads. The way the beads are arranged on the frame in groups of five aids the students in developing a mental picture of quantities. Being able to visualize quantities is an important step in developing number sense. The project will also provide my students with construction paper and modeling clay so that I can make art instruction more varied and exciting. If children have a selection of construction paper at home, they can use the colors they like when making things such as puppets, collages and other art projects. Since using regular clay isn't practical in a distance learning scenario, the Crayola modeling product provided through this project will allow me to do some of the art lessons with clay that children would normally receive if they were able to attend class in person.
Distance learning is challenging for young children, but it can be successful if students are provided with opportunities to actively engage in the class through hands-on learning.
This project will provide my students with materials needed to make our distance learning classes more effective and to give students a learning experience that is as close as possible to the classroom experience they are missing out on.
