My Students

I teach at a low-income public elementary school in Los Angeles.

My students are smart, funny, kind, and have wonderful hearts.

In my classroom, it is incredibly important for them to have positive experiences that will influence the way they look at themselves, treat others, and develop a growth mindset for taking risks and learning. Many of my students face great challenges outside of school that they can't control. But what they can control is the learning and how they will succeed through hard work and determination. Even though they have challenges outside my classroom, they always bring their enthusiasm to learn and their drive to do better.

My Project

I'm new to teaching Kindergarten and VERY new to teaching from home. It's exciting and scary. I can't wait to be the person who introduces them to letters, sounds, math, SCIENCE, friendship, and helping them start their big adventure in education.

One of my biggest challenges is going to be student engagement.

You can't engage students if they can't SEE what you're reading to them or teaching them on a piece of a paper. Even chart paper on a wall will be too small to view over their iPads. I desperately need an iPad stand so my students can see how I'm forming letters and writing stories about our friends and family. They also need to SEE the book I'm reading. This iPad stand is going to be the game changer for my students this year.

I've also been printing everything for them in color. Usually, I wouldn't do that. But without them having the hands-on experiences they'd normally have in class with colorful game pieces and toys, the least I could do is print things for them...sometimes using pretty colors. As I'm making 20 copies of journal covers for different subjects, alphabet cards, mini games, I'm slowly using all the ink I have in our class printer. Who knows how long we'll be distance learning, but getting special materials monthly (including color copies) will get my students excited and happy when they receive their materials. Sometimes the packaging of a gift makes all the difference, especially for our little ones. It'll definitely make them feel special!
