Distance Learning Materials

Help me give my students materials such as Play-Doh, tambourines and scissors so they have the same opportunities at home as they would get during in person learning.

My Students

Bryn Mawr Community School is part of Minneapolis Public Schools. The administration has decided to be full distance learning for the health and safety of staff and students. Our school is made up of a majority low income students. Eighty-five percent of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. The students in our program benefit from Autism based strategies. Many of our students at Bryn Mawr are benefiting from the box of materials the district provided at the beginning of the year, but not all materials are appropriate for our students. My team has worked hard to adapt the curriculum and materials to meet the needs of our students.

Students with Autism have to explicitly learn many skills that come naturally to most people as well as learn strategies to manage challenging behaviors.

The additional materials I am asking for will support our students in engaging in classroom learning.

Not only will having these materials in distance learning support their engagement, but families will learn strategies to use them at home. They will be set up for success when the learning continues outside of the school day.

My Project

During in person school, we have a variety of hands-on materials to structure daily learning. With these materials, we can create learning opportunities in the home during distance learning.

In large and small group learning, hands-on materials give students a concrete way of engaging with their environment.

In art, we use materials that not only create beautiful pieces, but provide sensory input as well; felt shapes and pom-poms, paint dinners, and clay. The adapted scissors are used weekly to develop cutting skills not just on paper, but with play doh.

In large and small group learning, materials like instruments (tambourines, rhythm sticks), sensory toys (play doh, beanbags, bubbles) and large motor toys (cones) are used to set up opportunities for building social skills, and coping skills.

All of these tools will support me and my team to create meaningful learning opportunities for our students, as well as continue to make progress on Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and objectives, even while at a distance.

Thank you for your support
