Distance Learning: Immigration, Migration, and Movement

Help me give my students engaging and relevant literature, materials, and curriculum as they enter an unprecedented year of remote learning because of COVID-19.

My Students

My 4th and 5th-grade students come from the surrounding local communities, are of different ethnic backgrounds, are of many varied economic situations, have different beliefs, and are engaged, creative learners starting their academic journey at a fairly new charter school. Together, these students observe, question, collaborate, communicate, and create! Inquiry is at the heart of each and every day. We encourage children to observe, to ask questions, to learn, and to share their discoveries with others. Since the school year will start online because of COVID-19, there are challenges and opportunities for starting this new school year.

My Project

These materials will make the experience of starting the school year online more engaging and accessible. The informational books will all be used to help support the students' learning, whether it is from home or in the classroom. My class has never had an iPad. Having an up to date iPad will be used to produce i Movies, games, and research.

The bundle of strong, poetic, and diverse books about the immigration and migration experience will help bring stories of others alive for the students as they learn right now.

Students will use the books to create their own story or informational text to share with others about their learning during this inquiry unit.
