Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities.
My students are in a self contained classroom for students with significant disabilities.
They learn using an alternate curriculum, alternate standards, and are assessed using an alternate test. I love to see the "a-ha moments" in my students. The joy on their faces when they finally complete what is seen as a simple task by most students is priceless. My students show me every day how to take pride in the little things. That is what keeps me giving my all for them.
My Project
My students will receive back to school gifts of crayons, markers, pencils, and printing paper so that they can follow along with online lessons. Printer ink, paper, cardstock, laminating sheets, and hook and loop dots will be used to make personalized binders for students so they can work on individual IEP goals such as tracing lines, matching letters, counting, etc. These care packages will help get my students off to a great start of a difficult year.
Several students have communicated that they wish they were back in a classroom.
My hope is that by creating a classroom-like environment in my home, it will help them adjust. I will use the dry erase board and flip chart paper to keep lessons as "normal" as possible, and as engaging as they can be while watching a computer.
