My students are preschool aged children who come to school every day excited to learn and explore their environment! Our school district unfortunately had to shut down overnight. When the state decided to close schools, our district was already closed. We didn't have the chance to send home resources or learning materials.
My students come from low-income households and do not have access to the materials they need to continue their development at home.
Although I send weekly activity ideas through email, I am limited to what I can suggest. Early childhood development affects a child's future in so many ways! With limited resources available at home, my students are at risk for falling behind in basic skills such as motor, language, and cognitive development!
My Project
I teach in an urban setting where the children are exposed to poverty and trauma. I have sixteen children in my class between the ages of three and five who came to school everyday enthusiastic about learning, never knowing they went without. Since we have been learning from home I have Zoom class meetings twice a week, send videos of me reading books, and email parents activity ideas for the week every Monday.
Except how can I send out activity ideas when my students do not have materials or resources at home?
With the materials I have requested, my students would have access to basic supplies such as paper, glue, markers, and more so they can continue exploring their creativity at home! With these materials, I could send parents developmentally appropriate activities so my students could further their motor, cognitive, verbal, and even social skills in ways they could not before!
