This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
¡Hola! Me llamo señora Tran and I think you probably guessed I am a high school Spanish teacher. The moment students’ step into my classroom, I know they can sense my love for the Spanish language and its culture. My parents instilled in me the importance of the language from a very young age, not knowing myself then, that years later I would find it to be my calling.
Our school is a Title I (predominantly low-income families) and PHBAO (Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other Non-Anglo), our students strive to make the best of their current circumstances and take advantage of the wonderful opportunities they are offered on our campus.
It was no surprise that when we closed our campus on March 13th, the majority of our student’s did not have the necessary tools to access the curriculum and be successful with distant learning. Lacking computers and/or internet made it extremely difficult for them to rise to their teacher's expectations. Even so, most students have adapted quickly and continue to fuel a fire in me to continue improving my practice and be more technologically savvy.
My Project
As I have grappled with the nuances of distance learning, it’s become evident that I’ve got a long way to go to become tech-savvy. Making myself accessible to students is my main goal and I believe an iPad would help me create engaging lessons to help inspire my students to continue developing their native language.
With the various applications and programs available to help my students complement their learning and application of skills, an iPad would be extremely valuable at this time.
Having access to programs such as Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, Pages, Keynote, IMovie etc. I would be able to set up lessons that would work for both synchronous and asynchronous learning.
