Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am working at one of the largest elementary schools in New York City. Many of my students get a lot of their basic needs met at school. For example, the whole school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. Luckily, students are still able to get grab-and-go food at our school, but they are lacking other supplies we usually provide for them.
COVID-19 will not stop us from fully supporting our families.
I am asking you to please help me continue to supply my students with everything they need. My students have gone above and beyond with their online learning. They have daily assignments I ask them to complete in addition to attending our class video meetings. I am inspired by their tenacity to rise above the challenges of remote learning. Now it is our turn to rise above the obstacles and do everything we can to make this experience as comfortable as possible for them.
My Project
My students are like a box of crayons. Each student's distance learning situation is unique. A common factor that I noticed is that many students don't have access to supplies such as gloves and masks, don't have adult guidance at home, and/or they lack access to school supplies. Providing each child with supplies will "level the playing field" for disadvantaged students and provide a common set of learning tools for distance learning activities. I want my students to have physical books to read to give them a break from the computer screen. I want my students to be able to tinker with art materials and have a creative outlet. But most importantly, I want their families to feel safe when they go outside to get food.
