My Human Anatomy students need 4 more Carosafe injected cats to complete the class set (3 are already in stock) for their spring dissection project.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. K.'s classroom raised $370
This project is fully funded
Help high performing students in a low socioeconomic school experience college level science.
The class is Human Anatomy, open to the top students in our high school. They are the crème of the crop in our school, which is in an economically depressed area. Each year the students look forward to this project- a chance to practice skills that will help them in college and gain a once in a lifetime experience. Unfortunately this year California has cut funding to public schools and without outside assistance these great kids will lose out.
The district has already said that there is no money in the budget for supplies. My students are very excited about the Donors Choose option and are geared up to take photos and share their appreciation. For the college bound student choosing a science major the skills in this lab activity will greatly help them in their future endeavors. All students will directly benefit because this may be as close as they ever get to peering into the human body. After a year studying about it this is a wonderful culminating activity.
Fortunately we have 3 cats- but that is not enough for an entire class to directly participate in the activity. By adding 4 more cats each student will be in a functional, small sized group allowing them to participate to the fullest extent possible. As this is a yearly project for the Human Anatomy class we have the rest of the supplies necessary in the lab to see this activity though.
All students will directly benefit because this may be as close as they ever get to seeing the inside of the human body, but for the future science major this is a necessary experience. This is a hands-on, student driven lab and the students absolutely thrive in this environment. This activity is spread over a period of 5 weeks. Students will do dissections of the muscular, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive and urinary system. Once all systems have been studied the final is a comprehensive lab-based test covering all material. This directly duplicates many college finals they could see in their educational careers.
Your help will ensure that my students get to experience this final project- a project many of them took the class expecting to participate in. For some, this culminating activity is the main reason they are in the Human Anatomy class. This activity is truly what Science Education is about; excited students experiencing hands-learning, using the activity as a springboard to further their knowledge base. Having first hand knowledge of the body systems and getting to experience a lab practical final that they will see in their college classes will help these wonderful students get a leg up in the competitive higher educational realm they will be entering after they graduate from high school.
