Dissecting the Circle: To Fractions and Beyond!

My students need compasses for learning fractions, measurement and geometry, and applying math using drafting skills and form drawing. The leads are for refilling the compasses.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are multi-cultural and come from very diverse backgrounds. They are American, which means they have family origins from China, Cambodia, Central and South America, Egypt, Africa, and Europe. They're funny, inquisitive, smart, and charming. They love hands-on activities, of course, and love building projects.

I have two very culturally and academically diverse groups of students: one group of honors, and one group of non-honors.

I teach both groups using the GATE education practices, as I think it is just good all-around education for everyone. I have a high percentage of girls in both classes.

My Project

We will use compasses to draw circles and learn how to dissect the circles using compasses, and understanding the basics of fractions, equivalent fractions, and natural patterns in geometry.

Students will create geometric form drawings, and describe the relationships between parts of the whole, fractions, and angles of a circle, degrees, and percents.

For example, to begin with, students will draw a circle and dissect it into 6th using a compass and ruler. From there, they will dissect another circle into 6th, and then thirds, and explain the relationship between the two. They will color their art with colored pencils. From there, students will dissect a circle into 6ths, then twelfths. Again, they will explain the relationships between the parts of the whole. From there, compasses will be used to create pie charts and to start understanding the concepts of percents, and ratios, and angle measures. We will also compare our form drawings to similar patterns found in nature, for example an apple cut in half, and the Fibonacci series found in shells, and trees.
