Dissecting and Exploring Our World

Help me give my students hands-on science experiences. Dissecting owl pellets, examining the contents of their shampoo, plant studies...what better way to teach science than with some hands-on activities.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Carlton's classroom raised $738

My Students

Despite economic status, my students come to school eager to learn. We are in a Title 1 school with very high percentage of free/reduced lunch. Also, my students are all on IEPs (Individualized Education Program). They all read 1 or more grade levels below their actual grade (7th and 8th).

As Albert Einstein said, "In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity." Even with economic and academic barriers, my students are learning how to overcome and be successful in learning.

Each of them bring excitement to the science classroom. As they learn new things about the things around them, I get to experience those moments with them. With each thing they learn, they desire to learn more and delve deeper into the topic of science. They ask questions of wonder and are in awe when they discover the answer on their own. So, despite the situation they are currently in, they don't let it bring them down. They plow through and are in the process of becoming successful students and will become successful community members.

My Project

My students are always eager to try new things. Whether it is dissecting something like owl pellets or discovering every piece of a flower or plant, they are ready to learn. I don't want their curiosity doesn't just end in the classroom. They need to learn things that will be useful in the real world. For example, what is in our everyday products that we use without thinking about the ingredients, what the temperature is in a European country and they will know how to convert it because they learned it in 7th and 8th grade science.

Or when they are looking into the night sky and are able to identify the planets and constellations.

They can take this knowledge and move into their high school education and their life after school.

Using hands-on materials will make a lasting impact on many of my students who have some academic struggles. So, any chance I can get to give them opportunities they may have never received, I do it. These activities can easily be put into virtual learning through videos and even allowing them to be the ones to record the lessons for future classes of students.
