Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are extraordinary. I have never experienced a group of students like this. With the home lives they live and lack of family support that many of them come from, one would expect that these students should be focusing on themselves. This is not the case with this class. They include each other and do their best to try and help fellow students learn. It is impressive how they work together.
This class makes me want to not only be a better teacher but a better person every day.
This class came to first grade already with a stigma attached to them. "They were a hard group," someone said, "They weren't taught anything last year" and many other negative comments. My students are proving them wrong. They are amazing, learning and growing every day.
This is a great group of kids who deserve the best in every way.
My Project
Students love using manipulavtives to practice what they are learning. Small group instruction is a good way to reinforce what students have been taught in math and literacy. Small groups allow for differentiation in ways that can't be done in whole group instruction. Students use a multiple choice type of activity. The design of the VersaTiles allow students the opportunity to skip problems and come back to them when ready.
VersaTiles are great for partner work, a good opportunity to practice and review content as well as building skills needed for teamwork.
VersaTiles are visually appealing and providing hands-on practice with an opportunity for self-check incorporated right into the manipulative.
