Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This classroom is a preschool and intensive early intervention program for students with disabilities.
This special education class serves kids with moderate to severe disabilities.
Most of my students have a diagnosis of Autism but may also have developmental delays, speech and language impairments, Down syndrome or intellectual disabilities. Many of the students are English Language Learners. Our school is in an area of extreme poverty in Southern California and all of the students in this class qualify for the free lunch program. Our class is in a school that is identified at a Title I school.
My Project
Every day, each student accesses the discovery center to develop their senses of exploration, discovery and observation. Through play and engagement of real-life activities, my hard-working students also continue to develop the skills that Autism makes a little more challenging for them, like turn-taking, waiting, communicating, having joint attention and understanding language.
My students will continue to develop their learning, to learn skills and begin to develop a love for science and exploration, all at the same time!
The selection of sorting toys will help students explore how science will impact their future and create joint attention skills. Student will be encouraged to remain engaged with items that are different!
My students are significantly impacted by their special needs, but it does not slow them down. These materials will make the discovery center a more exciting place for them to work on some of the things that are the hardest for them.
