This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music is an integral part of a child's education and with your help, we can make sure our students have exposure to artists who paved the way for our young musicians.
My students will be learning about the musicians' story and the history of music that they will be performing!
I teach music at a dynamic elementary school where all our students love to learn and engage in the arts. Our entire school population receives free lunch and many students are unable to afford their own materials, books and instruments.
Luckily, I am at a charter school that supports the arts but we depend on donors and other supporters to help with our music program.
My Project
There's nothing like a good book. Even as a music teacher, I understand that my students will connect with musical themes, impressive artists and historical musical events through the exciting pages of literature. My students learn in context, so I not only teach them the blues on their recorder, but they also read about BB King, and vocally feel the struggles of Billie Holiday while dancing to the samba of Tito Puentes. One student proclaimed, "Ms. L, when you add music to these stories, it's like the pages comes alive!" By combining music and literature with new musical storybokks, the profound contributions of these musicians will stay with my students for years to come. Thank you for helping us save the music!
