Discovering the Mysteries of the Ocean

Help me give my students a hands-on research adventure led by career scientists at the UT Marine Science Center on the R/V Katy.

My Students

The students of my classroom come from all walks of life and every background imaginable. They are the creatives of the school, the ones that sit in desks and rows and daydream about worlds without right or wrong answers, where they can create the questions, the answers, and all the pathways to get to them. They yearn for a place where your self worth is not tied to a letter grade but to the dedication and spirit, you bring to the project.

My goal as an educator is to offer my students a place where they can create, dream, learn, and grow into the most amazing people this world has to offer.

I want to give them a place to try, succeed, fail, collaborate, and create without the fear of right and wrong answers, and with nothing but their own judgment to hold them back. I want to challenge them to understand the world in a way they never thought of and celebrate with them when they finally do.

My students are the dreamers, and I simply want to give them a safe place to dream.

My Project

Our students are on a mission to change the world. They are learning day in and day out that THEY are the future, and THEY have the power to change the very notion of humanity. In order to do this, they need as many real experiences, with real professionals, as possible.

Our research trip will allow my students to expand their knowledge of the ocean, get a better understanding of the work of marine scientists, and begin to think about how they will change the world.

Hands-on work is the best work for anyone. The students in our classroom will love getting their hands into actual research, and they will use the knowledge they gain to work on tackling problems they care about.

Our class has the drive to recycle and live locally. They raise a garden and sell produce at the local farmer's market. Luckily for them, our "local" also involves some major waterways such as the Gulf of Mexico, Laguna Madre, and Corpus Christi Bay. They have spent time at the beach, hosted a Coastal Learning Expo, and met with the Coast Guard, and this opportunity will give them the chance to get into the ocean and think about the implications of their choices. Those thoughts are the seeds that will grow into change once they complete their education.
