My Students
"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand." -Chinese proverb
This Chinese proverb is a perfect way to describe a typical day in my classroom. Since children learn in different ways, I strive to incorporate a variety of learning strategies to ensure their success.
My school has a very high rate of poverty.
The majority of our students are on either free or reduced price lunch. I have observed the lack of parent participation and home support. I had a student once tell me that his dad told him he didn't need to learn how to read because it's not important. These struggles are all-too-familiar to my wonderful Kindergarten students.
My students are kind, wonderful, loving and amazing little people. I love to see how each child walks in as an individual on the first day of school and walks out weeks later as part of a classroom family. I take enormous pride in the relationships that are created within my classroom walls.
As a Kindergarten teacher, it is my responsibility to make sure my students' first school experience is a positive one. I have to make them love learning so the thoughts of education not being important are overshadowed by their love for learning and wanting to be better. I strive to give my kids the best possible foundation.
My Project
My students need a Zingo! Bingo Games Set, a Magnetic Sight-Word Board, a Sight-Words Activity Chest and other word building activities. My students will use the sight word games to help them grow into stronger readers. They will practice sight words and phonemic awareness as well as phonics. The materials will be used in whole group and in small groups as well as learning centers. Learning centers are essential because they address team work, problem solving, and time management as well as independence. The resources requested will allow my kids to work at their own pace on their own time. These materials will benefit countless students for years to come.
My students will benefit from this project because it will allow them a variety of activities to strengthen their reading skills.
They will use games and hands-on activities to learn their sight words as well as other pre-reading skills. Creating strong readers is essential because reading spans across everything and is integrated into every academic subject. These resources will offer my students the opportunity to practice their reading skills and, ultimately, help them achieve their personal best.
