My honors freshmen are a group of avid readers and ambitious, take-charge learners. When I told them about our hero's journey project I gave them the option to read novels independently or in groups set up like book clubs, and they overwhelmingly chose the book club option. This group of students loves the social aspects of learning from and with one another, which is why they want to read books together as a group.
This group of students are working hard to achieve their goals and will thrive when given the opportunity to choose their book club novel.
Their sense of focus and motivation will make their book club discussions successful as they discuss both novels they read and how they apply to the hero's journey.
My Project
Having these novels in class will offer my students additional options for our hero's journey unit than previously offered. This group of titles provides my students with more genre options, such as historical fiction which wasn't previously an option. Providing more stories to choose from gives my students more examples of what the hero's journey can entail.
Through this project, my freshmen will meet in book clubs to sit and discuss their novels regarding content, their thoughts/opinions, and how the novels fit the hero's journey.
It's important for my students to understand that the hero's journey is found in many books beyond the classics found in the canon.
