Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science, and math. We incorporate technology through the use of iPad apps, and we learn beginning engineering concepts through the use of of building blocks and other manipulative. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.
My Project
My students and I will soon be taking a STEM related field trip to the Discovery Cube LA. While there, we will tour the museum exhibits and participate in a program presented by the museum volunteers. The exhibits include STEM topics such as the importance of recycling, medicine and health, weather, electricity, robotics, and force and motion. The exhibits are all directed at children and foster curiosity about these subjects.
We were very fortunate to receive a previous grant to help pay for transportation and admission to the Discovery Cube LA.
For this follow-up project, I am requesting funding to purchase a school logo t-shirt for each of my students. Having matching t-shirts with the school logo on them will help us keep track of the students on the field trip. They are a great visual for making sure the class sticks together!
Your donation will provide 25 wonderful children with t-shirts to wear as they participate in a wonderful STEM learning experience. Thank you for your help!
