Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs; many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line, and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science, social studies, and incorporate art daily. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.
My Project
I would like to enhance my students' first school experience by taking them on a class trip to the Discovery Center Los Angeles.
At the Discovery Center, my students will experience a variety of exhibits including markets, schools, recycling, and parks.
Interacting with the exhibit materials will help my English Learners learn new vocabulary, develop friendships with their classmates, and learn about opportunities in our community. They will get to make connections to their new neighborhood and their new environment, all while having fun with the hands-on materials! They will grow in their understanding of our country, develop confidence in themselves and adjust to new experiences more readily. It will be a memorable experience that they will long remember.
This field trip will also be a way to engage families in their child’s learning, as parents will be coming along on the trip with us. Through parental involvement, children learn that education is important.
