My Students
China is a fascinating country full of culture and history.
I teach an enthusiastic group of highly capable 4th and 5th graders who love to learn and devour curriculum as fast as I can create it.
Unfortunately I no longer have any funding for supplies or materials.
On Saturdays I am taking an intensive class through the University of Washington/Jackson School of International Studies on East Asia. I plan to use what I've learned to develop a rigorous, multidimensional unit on China.
My Project
One aspect of this unit will be teaching the children about the ancient art of brush painting (700 AD). I've researched what supplies I will need so students will practice the art in its original form. They will use bamboo goat hair brushes, grind their own ink and paint on rice paper.
I am also requesting non-fiction books, many written by Chinese artists, that describe the history and authentic methods used. I myself am a watercolor artist and the books will give me the needed directions to teach the children.
In our global society, we must teach children about other cultures.
This unit will not only teach students about Chinese culture, but it will also integrate art into the curriculum.
