Help me give my students a chance to read about the history of this nation. In a minority community it is very important that kids learn about history through young characters and from different perspectives.

My Students
The students at our school come from a community with high poverty, low unemployment, and gang related activities. Many of the students are below grade level in reading. Reading has unfortunately not been a part of their lives. Many of the children live in shelters, with a third of our student population being classified as homeless. The teaching staff works hard to help the students with ELA (English Language Arts) but the students are still only at 15 percent proficiency.
Our student body receives free lunch, breakfast, and many of the kids stay after school, so they can have a third meal.
Our students desperately need to make books apart of their lives and are being introduced to many different historical concepts for the first time. Unfortunately, most of the kids do not have books at home and the school does not have class sets of books. Our students are already way behind grade level in reading comprehension; it is imperative that reading becomes more of a focal point in our school especially in social studies.
My Project
These books will help the kids be able to see history through the lives of other young people. Too many children are not reading at home and the goal of our social studies department is to incorporate chapter books into the curriculum. The books that were picked come from different the point of view of diverse characters that the children at our school will embrace. Reading is the key to helping struggling students learn vocabulary and get back on grade level.
Historical fiction books will help the students not only learn about the history of this country, but will help kids struggling in English language arts with vocabulary and reading comprehension.
The social studies department knows how important reading is for middle school kids and hopes to make reading chapter books a major part of the curriculum. Class discussions on the books will be a weekly activity throughout the school year and hopefully will help make many of our students lifelong readers.
