I teach in the inner-city of Chicago in a very depressed neighborhood. We are studying American Literature, but the traditional American Literature courses do not truly explain all of America. To help the students think about the America that they know, I have decided to read the book "Our America" with my students. This is a book written by two boys who grew up in the Ida B. Wells homes, one of the most dangerous Chicago housing projects. The book is written in an interview format, and I am planning to have my students conduct their own interviews of their neighborhoods. I hope to have my students share these research projects with other students in the school and the people in their neighborhoods.
To have this project become a success, my students will need tape recorders with microphones, disposable cameras, and a camcorder so that they can interview the people in their neighborhoods and create a multi-media representation of their projects.
My students have lived in their dilapidated neighborhoods for their entire lives, and many of them have never even seen Lake Michigan, let alone been out of the city. However, they do not often really think about how their lives fit into the fabric of America. The aim of this project is to help them do that, and in doing so, come up with possible solutions to the problems facing our inner city neighborhoods. Most of all, I want them to discover "Our America".
