My Students
My class of kindergarteners is a fun group, who are eager to learn! They attend school in a large district outside of Denver, Colorado. It is a Title I school, which means that there is a high percentage of students from low-income families. There are about 600 students in the kindergarten through 8th grade building, and over 85% of the elementary school children qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the struggles that many students face outside of the classroom, my students are excited to come to school and ready to learn!
My Project
We have recently implemented Discovery Reading in our classroom and are trying to build up our library to include additional high interest, non-fiction text. During Discovery Reading, students have the opportunity to select a non-fiction book of their choice. After students have chosen their book, we engage in a discussion and ask questions about what students are learning. Student talk has increased dramatically since we started Discovery Reading and it has been a wonderful way to hear students' ideas.
These books would be used during Discovery Reading to provide more non-fiction choices to students.
They are also leveled more closely to their reading level. Thank you for considering a donation to our classroom!
