Discovering Gifted and Talented Artists in South Central

My students need art lessons with proper arts supplies such as sketch pads and drawing pencils to tap into their undiscovered gifts. Unfortunately, in South Central Los Angeles poverty is high, resources are low.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What would it be like if you were born with a talent, yet it lie dormant throughout your life just because you never new about it. My young scholars in South Central Los Angeles are very talented, yet some of their gifts are never discovered due to lack of exposure

My third graders are an amazing group of active, talented scholars.

The school they attend is a charter school located in a low income community. The school has been on "lock down" on occasion due to violence in the neighborhood. There have been homicides near the school and many of the students hear gun shots near their homes. Regardless of their environment they are eager to learn but sometimes the lack of background knowledge makes learning more difficult. My students do not have a lot of exposure outside of the inner city, especially related to the arts.

My Project

With the proper drawing tools, students will have the opportunity to create as real artists. I have been setting aside time each week teaching art. We have been using their school pencils and erasers. With the variety of drawing pencils they will be able to enhance their drawings by creating a stronger contrast with the different pencils. In addition the blending stumps will help them have more precision in blending, currently they are using a torn piece of tissue paper. The personal pencil sharpeners will help them keep a tip on their pencils for drawing fine lines. This will also cause less disruptions in the class because they won't have to leave their seat to go to the loud pencil sharpener in the back of the room. The drawing paper will be used for a final projects that will be displayed in an art gallery format.

My scholars have been so excited about the progress they have been making in drawing.

Now that the students have experienced the basics of drawing its time to let them have the full experience of drawing with the proper tools. When children discover their gifts, it builds their self esteem and this benefits them in all areas of their life. As they start feeling good about themselves, they treat others better and they build confidence knowing improvement in anything only requires practice!
