This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a first grade class of 22 minority students in a poor urban community. Most students are lacking even the most basic materials to be able to successfully learn at home. My students and I have taken on our distance learning with determinations, consistency, and perseverance. We are in need of books that represent my students, their diversity, and their cultures.
These books have the power to improves critical thinking skills and encourages academic confidence.
My Project
This project will help my students see themselves represented in picture books and read alouds. Diversity in the classroom teaches students to appreciate different perspectives and draw stronger conclusions. Challenging students to consider different perspectives can also teach them how to interact with their peers on a social level, and equip them with skills they’ll use for the rest of their life.
Diversity is everything that makes people different from each other.
This includes many different factors: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, ability, age, religious belief, or political conviction. All these factors work together to inform how students (and teachers, and everyone else) encounter the world.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
