My Students
As a teacher, I enjoy seeing the academic success of students. I work in a high-poverty, high-minority school where many of my students struggle with academic success especially in the area of Math, Social Studies, and Science. These are highly energetic students and I want to channel that energy into motivation for high academic success. Many content concepts can be difficult to understand and with virtual learning, they can be even more difficult without those motivators that in-person learning can offer. Our students come from diverse backgrounds. Many students have families that struggle to make ends meet, but even with these struggles at home, our students strive to be the best. We have students with learning disabilities at varying degrees, Autism, and other health problems that hinder their learning. I also serve many students that English is their second language and even students who don't speak any English at all.
My Project
Studying ancient civilizations will help students have a sound better understanding of the world, develop knowledge of the world’s progression and increase their cultural understanding of the people in it. Ancient civilizations open the door to how history derived and came to be.
One of the most difficult things in teaching ancient civilization to students is teaching lessons that make ancient history relevant and worth learning.
Many students, especially low-income students, struggle with the ability to conceive information that is part of ancient world cultures. The good news is it can become an interesting curriculum, especially using a history magazine subscription that provides lots of visuals, lessons, and activities for student engagement. Also, another way to help students learn the information is with projects. The projects provide students with a visual guide to help students with memorization as well as the progression of the ancient world cultures.
Studying how ancient history contributes to our cultural understanding and intellectual development allows students the knowledge of where they came from, struggles they faced which help with self-awareness. This development of culture and self-awareness through the study of ancient civilizations can be made relevant through project-based learning activities. Students will engage in projects such as the Olympic Games, archaeological digs around the school, and incorporating the concepts of STEM to explore the development of ancient tools, artifacts, and inventions. The ION tailgater speaker will be used for the production and presentation of these projects.
