Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading opens up the world of learning with stories and pictures that capture the attention of children of all ages. The ready access to expository reading takes comprehension and learning to that next level we are trying to take our children.
The majority of my students are low income, and on free lunch.
English is the second language for them. Our school transitions students from Spanish to English in the fourth grade. This means they must have mastered sufficient English by then, to be tested by the state in English. Our biggest challenge is vocabulary. These books will allow them to team read to each other and address this need.
My Project
So often while introducing concepts to students at my school, they have no real life visual events or experiences to relate to. Ready access to books with stories and pictures will be a good engagement activity. We use the 5E model of instruction,( Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate),that begins with engaging the students with an activity. We move through the lesson and end with an elaboration and evaluation. During this time books would play another important roll. Students may use learning to produce visual representations, such as foldables, booklets, pictures, posters etc.
We all know how important reading is.
We all know that the love of reading means increased intellect. The student who gains this love early is more apt to maintain it. It is very important that we foster the reading as often as we can. We can model the reading to increase fluency, which in turn increases comprehension.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
