My Project
In my role as a speech-language pathologist, I am deeply attuned to the transformative power of education in promoting health and wellness, especially when it comes to understanding and accepting disabilities. Through literature, we have a unique opportunity to cultivate empathy, tolerance, and compassion within a community. Educating individuals about different disabilities goes beyond mere awareness; it is a pathway to fostering belonging, dignity, opportunity, and confidence for those with disabilities. By disseminating information through accessible books, we aim to break down societal barriers, creating a more inclusive and understanding environment.
Statistics have consistently highlighted the detrimental health implications of individuals with disabilities, particularly those who feel compelled to mask their conditions to conform to societal expectations.
This is particularly evident in cases of autism, where individuals may mask their traits to fit in, leading to increased stress and adverse health effects. In response to this, I am initiating a "take one, leave one" type library near campus for the surrounding community. This library, stocked with titles proudly representing childhood apraxia of speech, stuttering, autism, depression, Down syndrome, sensory processing disorder, Tourette's syndrome, cerebral palsy, speech delay, and more, aims to reduce feelings of inferiority, shame, and anxiety associated with disabilities. Through this initiative, I hope to create a supportive space that not only provides valuable resources but also fosters a sense of community, understanding, and acceptance to support the health and wellness of those with disabilities.
