Directional Microphone and Video Stabilizer for Young Movie Makers!

My Students

There are over four hundred students currently enrolled at our elementary school. My students are inquisitive, hands-on learners, and are so excited when they can learn about and experiment with engaging technology. Whenever possible, I want to put this technology in their hands so they can create, problem solve, and develop their visual understanding of complex ideas.

Our students love to use technology to create and innovate.

As a Library Media Specialist, I want to offer them the tools, support, and encouragement to do just that.

My Project

We recently acquired two iPad Minis that will be used by our students for movie-making projects. Most will agree that the iPad is an amazing educational device that allows students to record video quite easily. However, the students and I are noticing that the iPad’s built-in microphone definitely has its limitations. The quality of the recorded audio is mediocre, particularly when filming video outdoors or in large spaces with background noise. We also noticed that the iPad is somewhat awkward to hold for extended lengths of time, and that these longer video clips can come out a bit "shaky". A solution to these problems is to use an external directional microphone, which can greatly improve the audio quality when recording, and a video stabilizing case.

For this grant, I would like to acquire a Rode VideoMic Go Directional Microphone and a Melamount video stabilizer for the iPads.

There are different types of microphones that can connect to the iPad with various adapters. But the simplest method is to use a quality microphone such as the Rhode VideoMic Go that can plug directly into the iPad’s headphone jack (the headphone jack also acts as an input for audio) without the need for an additional power source. The Rhode VideoMic Go is literally “plug and play”, and will allow our students to capture audio quickly and effectively. The microphone even includes a shoe mount and a windscreen for minimizing wind noise when filming outdoors.

The Melamount video stabilizer is a rugged case that will allows our student filmmakers to hold the iPad Mini in a much more stable way, and will allow them to connect and use external accessories such as a microphone, light, and a tripod.
