This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Special Education teacher in an urban district who works with students with a wide variety of mental, emotional, physical, and learning disabilities in a self-contained classroom.
Many of these students will have additional disabilities such as autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs), challenging and/or self-injurious behavior, emotional disturbance, epilepsy, hearing impairment, physical impairment, severe impairment in communication skills and visual impairment.
The students in my room have limited communication skills and will therefore not have control of the multiple means by which other students communicate such as speech, body language, facial expressions and print.
My Project
Since eating is one of our kids all time favorite activities, we thought it was important to teach kids to set the table for a meal.
It is never too early to teach kids the proper way to set the table for dinner.
It is an important functional task that students need to learn by actually performing the task hands-on.
To help kids practice, we are starting with supplies for one table setting so kids can begin by learning how to set their own place for meals or one day when they begin employment and choose to work in a restaurant.
One day our students may decide to live on their own, so giving them this opportunity to learn how to prepare themselves for their meals teaches them independence and ownership.
It's our job to give your child the best possible start in life, embracing the different abilities so our students can thrive.
