In the ever-changing world of education, more and more opportunities are presented in highly technological, media-savvy methods. Presentations from students, from high school up through graduate school, are expected to be dynamic, interesting, and visually appealing to all observers. For students to thrive in this modern education environment, they must be capable of utilizing all technology at their disposal.
PCs, for many years, have been the dominant force in public education. Microsoft software has driven education, and will always be critical to the success of students. However, recently new technologies have erupted that have begun to change the face of education computing. Digital imaging, video editing, and presentation software has taken a new turn with the growth of Apple technology. Programs like Photoshop, iMovie, Fetch, and various others have re-envisioned the ways that students interact with computers and digital imaging. Schools have begun to invest in Apple computers to give students a chance to stretch their imaginative wings and utilize these fantastic new programs, creating more innovative and creative individuals who may one day be our future graphic designers, photographers, web designers, or any number of other occupations.
In our neighborhood, however, this is a very difficult opportunity. Apple technology, while gaining market share in the working world, is struggling to find a foothold in our community due to pricing limitations. We hope that at our school, however, we can take away many of these limitations and provide students with opportunities to interact with technology that will greatly enhance their education experience. Here at our school, students come together from the Philadelphia community and prove that they deserve and will take a chance to learn and achieve. Ours is a community designed around the ideals of success through hard work, determination, and collaborative effort. These students have not been given many opportunities to succeed prior to their arrival at our school, but show the resiliency every day that makes them such an outstanding group of children. They hold tight to the belief that is at the heart of our school community, that “This is our school, we make it shine!”
For these students to be given a chance to interact with Apple technology and the fabulous programs that they offer, these computers need to make an appearance in their schools. As the technology instructor for the building, as well as the technology curriculum designer, I yearn to offer to students the chance to view and experiment with the Apple OS and Apple programming. Incorporating this Mac, along with others in the future, into the classroom will alter everyday technology instruction, as well as enable the start of an after school digital video documentation club for our school, a first in our Charter School organization. Your generous donation can enable students a chance to reinvent the way that they understand pictures, video, and web design software. Your gift can give truly underprivileged students the same opportunities that many suburban students take for granted every day.
