Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is located in an urban community and serves students ranging in ages 16 to 22. All of our students have either dropped out or been asked to leave a traditional comprehensive high school because of behavioral or academic issues. We offer students the same education they would receive at a traditional school with the exception of classes being a smaller, more concentrated environment. Because of our relatively small size, students are able to experience a more individualized, personal educational experience.

Our primary obstacle is finding the funds to provide resources for our students. The school operates on an extremely limited budget so we must be very careful with what we spend our resources on. While materials such as a camcorder are necessary for a filmmaking class, other resources such as textbooks take a higher priority. As a result, it is much more difficult to adequately fund elective classes with the necessary materials.

Many of our students find the arts as a positive and safe way to express themselves. Part of this means that we need to have the proper materials for them to have access to. For my filmmaking course, a camcorder and bag are necessary to teach the course. These materials would greatly benefit my students by giving them the opportunity to have real life, hands on experience. Having these materials for this class could help my colleagues and I in our goal to help our students make positive changes in their lives. By showing them areas where they could excel in, students can build their self-esteem as well as their hopes for a more successful future.

By funding my request, your donation would greatly help my students find a meaningful and skillful direction in their lives. Many students are interest in working in the entertainment industry but do not have access to the proper materials. These materials could help them gain insight into something that could possibly lead to a life changing experience. You can also help in building self-esteem and responsibility in my students. By being able to express themselves on film they would have an outlet for their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. By being entrusted with equipment such as a camcorder, my students would also be able to have a real-life lesson in the importance of being responsible and dependent.
