Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sitting through classes that seem unnecessary and the same old same old is one of the hardest things for seniors to do. Digital storytelling will give these students a chance to do something different, learn about multi-media projects, and tell some great stories.
My students attend an urban public high school in one of the toughest areas of Pennsylvania.
The students have college aspirations and are amazingly creative and intelligent. 90% of the population is ethnic minorities and all the students at our school receive free and reduced lunch.
None-the-less, the students are keyed into the new electronic age but lack the opportunity and skills to put what they know to more use. The students are very passionate and strong willed and are always looking for new ways to express themselves and share their ideas.
My Project
Our school has been able to become part of the Classrooms for the Future program and we have access to laptops for the students to use, however those laptops get used only for word processing and Internet research and signing up for the SATs. Providing students with digital cameras will allow us to engage the other software available and encourage the students to express themselves in new non-traditional ways. These cameras will also allow the students to bring their outside lives into school in a new and exciting way. It will also give them an opportunity to see their own community in a new light and literally through a different lens.
This project will engage the students in a way they have never been before.
It will give them a tangible project to walk out of the school with; one that they can be proud of and show off for the rest of their lives. It will help build their self-confidence, their ability to express themselves, and their computer skills, skills that will help them succeed in the digital age as many of them leave high school and move right into the workforce.
