My students need different creative ways to be able to tell their individual stories such as an Echo Dot and Go Talk Recorders.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Marber's classroom raised $934
This project is fully funded
My Students
Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
My Project
For our class of students with autism, digital storytelling means something different for each child. Each individual communicates their own story in different ways. Many of our students are nonverbal or minimally verbal and require unique and creative ways for to help them communicate their story.
Your generous donation will help us fund items that will help tell the stories of 8 students with autism in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade.
Just as our students are all different and learn and excel in different ways, their stories must be communicated in different ways. We have requested materials that will help each and every child to succeed. We have requested Go Talk Recorders and stands which provide nonverbal and minimally verbal students to select pictures and photos which produces a verbal output when selected. This means our students have a voice to tell their stories even if that voice does not come straight from their mouth. We have also requested an Echo speaker which will benefit our students who need communication support to tell their stories. This will enforce clear pronunciation and help students regulate the speed at which they speak so that Alexa can understand their requests and verbalizations. Lastly, we have requested a slant board and books so that students can have positive examples of storytelling in action before telling their own stories.
We hope that our project will be fully funded so that our students can become excellent digital storytellers. Our students with autism become more engaged when using technology and are ready to excel in their own way!
