Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone has a story to tell. And everyone deserves the opportunity to tell it. My classroom is a community of storytellers. We listen and learn from one another. We build solidarity through shared experiences and new understandings. In our classroom, we try to make reading and writing come alive.
My students come to our school because they haven't been successful at their previous high schools, or because they've had to take time off from school due to pregnancy or incarceration or trauma.
Some must work to help support their families. Others have been separated from their families and have immigrated to the U.S. with the hope of building a better life for themselves. But no matter how our students come to us, they come to us with sharp minds and big hearts and stories. A living world of stories which they may never have had the opportunity to share in the classroom. My goal is to change that. My students are often intimidated by the writing process. But by framing the lesson around oral storytelling and digital media, I hope to spark some inspiration and make the writing process less daunting.
My Project
We are requesting 6 digital voice recorders. We are entering a new age of digital literacy. And it's often young people who are guiding us along this path. By introducing digital media into the storytelling process, I hope to bridge the gap between my students' knowledge and skills in technology, and the fear and apprehension that they feel when writing. The lesson will go as follows: Students will be asked to think of one moment in their lives that shaped them; that helped to define who they are today. Next, each of our six tables will be given a digital voice recorder. They will go around the table, one by one, and tell the story to the group, while the machine records. Students will then transcribe the story that they told to the group; practicing their editing and revision techniques. The final draft will be a personal narrative. This narrative will be recorded again, downloaded to video software, and synchronized to visual images that relate to their story. In just a few weeks, students will have produced their own film.
One of my students' greatest challenges is in believing that they can accomplish great things.
Boosting confidence is an essential element in every lesson that I teach. That's why I try to build on the knowledge that students already have. But I also want them to understand that their stories matter. That their experiences add strength to the rich fabric of our world. I believe that digital storytelling will help to do that.
