Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as Attention-Deficit, Dyslexia, Social-Emotional, and Autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with social-economic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
My Project
The aim of my project is to engage students with special needs in the learning process coupled with teaching them 21st-century digital skills. Reading and math deficits are their struggles, yet my scholars are quite creative. Albert Einstein was even considered a diverse learner; however, with the right tools in his hands, he demonstrated high levels of ingenuity.
With each subject that I teach, my goal is to provide my scholars with hands-on resources to address their visual (learn by seeing) and tactile (learn by doing) needs.
There are geniuses in my classroom that have the power to create and design; however, without proper resources, they are not aware of their artistic capabilities. Coding and art-making encompass the same set of skills: problem-solving and design; therefore, more exposure to high-quality instruction through varied, non-traditional methods, the more my students are open to tapping into their potential.
My First Coding Book, DK Workbooks: Computer Coding, and National Geographic Kids: Everything Robotics will provide my diverse leaner scholars with background knowledge about coding and robotics. The Thames & Kosmos Robotics: Smart Machines Science Kit, Code Car Toy for Kids, CoderBunnyz and Klutz LEGO Chain Reactions Craft Kit are hands-on resources to reinforce students' understanding of coding and robotics. The Animation Studio complete stop motion animation kit with camera, software, and book, Coding for Kids - Game Design Animation Software, Huion Graphics Drawing Tablet Board Kit, and Klutz Lego Make Your Own Movie tasks will be performed on the HP 17-inch Laptop with a screen viewable for a group of 3-5 students during collaborative learning. The book entitled, "So, You Want to Be a Coder?" will introduce my diverse learner scholars to careers in coding and robotics. Arts supplies and canvases are to visually display our digital learning. Thank you for your support!
