Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As two visual arts teachers, we know the power of art to transform a student's world and empower them to attain their goals and be the narrators of their own stories. Our students enrolled with us for one primary reason: they want a better chance at being the first person in their family to attend and then graduate from a 4 year college or University. Having the opportunity to tell their story will empower them to attain this goal. At our free, public charter school our limited art budget allows for basic art supplies. We know that expanding our students' repertoire of art tools will both expose them to the possibilities and excitement of the art world, and encourage them to own their story as they strive for college admittance.

We would like to do this by allowing each of our 250 sophomores and juniors to tell their own story through digital photography and photo editing. In a poll conducted at the end of last school year, more than 45% of our students said photography is their #1 artistic interest...but cameras are hard to come by at our school. Because of this, students resort to using camera technologies found on phones or disposable point and shoot cameras.

Having a class set of digital cameras would give more students access to technology that is continuously changing and at the forefront of how we share stories in our society today. Your help will allow us to purchase 4 digital cameras, a large case, and rechargeable batteries. It may not sound like enough, but we know that students sharing cameras in groups results in just as much learning as when each student has his/her own camera. Here is what we plan to do: With 4 new cameras we will introduce photography and narrative story telling to our students. Students will work in small groups, exploring and telling stories of their environments, through the lens of a camera, and then compare those stories to the work of photojournalists in American history. Photography will become a vehicle for the change they seek within their community, and allow them to reflect on the major issues within their own lives.

These critical, observational, creative, and comparative skills are all vital for college success. We know that teaching these college-ready skills in art class will hook our students' interest and encourage them to think critically and creatively. Photography has a rich and beautiful history that many of our students have yet to explore within the visual arts curriculum at our school. Your help will make it possible for our student body to become familiar with one of the most prestigious art forms in recent art history and allow them to share the stories of "their" world through the lens of a camera.
