This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine taking a photography course and not being able to learn how to USE the equipment. Everyone has access to today's point and shoot cameras but isn't the point of learning new things to actually LEARN NEW THINGS. I'm trying to teach them how to use a DSLR instead of just using the auto features

We are in the central valley of California in a title one school.

Most students here only have their camera phones to document their lives. These students see the professional grade photographs that surround them and they want to know how to create those on their own, without just using a cool filter or effect. These students may use their knowledge and experience to develop the drive to continue professionally, as a side job to facilitate extra money, or just to create lasting memories for their families.

My Project

Students learn how to use a point and shoot camera and how to manipulate the image on the computer. They also learn how to use an SLR camera, yes, we still do the film side. Learning about how light interacts with objects is best taught with an SLR so it would be nice to give the kids the connection to f-stops, shutter speeds and ISO's to current technology. So many people do not know how to use a DSLR is it's true MANUAL fashion. These students will be able to understand how to blur backgrounds with depth of field, lower shutter speeds to get motion in water, and capture things the human eye cannot. The best part is they can do this now without having to wait to develop film to see if they got it right.

For the students who have an added interest we do offer night time photography workshops, weekend photography walks and the school offers field trips to Yosemite National Park and San Francisco.

These places on their own are amazing but it really offers the students a professional feel when they get to take their knowledge into the field, with the right equipment.
