My Students
Set in a rural but bustling micropolis, our school is home to a diverse bunch of third through fifth grade learners. With nine classrooms per grade, our group of just over 500 students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many have spent their entire young lives in this town, while quite a few have moved here from varying states and even other countries allowing their families to take advantage of the job opportunities in this exciting town.
A large group of students has shown interest in taking their real-world literacy skills to the next level by creating a school newspaper.
Students want to write, edit, illustrate, interview, report, photograph, and caption to showcase their broad talents and create a sense of school community.
My Project
I am requesting a DSLR camera to get my students started down the path of photojournalism. Students will be creating our own school newspaper and every great story needs a fitting picture.
With this high-quality camera, students will learn the basics of camera use, what makes a great picture, and how to format pictures for use in a community publication.
Students will be called upon as leaders among their peers to photograph exciting classroom experiences, school-wide events, and sporting activities, among other, lower-profile day-to-day happenings in our building. They will be made responsible for getting great shots, as well as formatting them in the correct way for a school newspaper.
